With his new album To The One (Abstract Logix/Mediastarz), iconic guitarist and composer and 2010 Grammy Winner John McLaughlin looks backwards and forwards simultaneously. The six original songs are hauntingly evocative – with roiling rhythmic swells, modal expanses, and telepathic group interaction echoing the profound influence of John Cotrane’s 1965 spiritual jazz masterpiece A Love Supreme.
 
Mostly written in July and August of 2009, the music composing To The One was set down in the studio in November and December, with very few overdubs, by McLaughlin’s current performing outfit, the Fourth Dimension: Gary Husband (keyboards, drums), Etienne M’Bappe (electric bass), and Mark Mondesir (drums). Compositional devices clearly inspired by Coltrane are fused with elements of McLaughlin’s own multi-faceted approach, all delivered with a group empathy and shared vision that harkens back to Coltrane’s fearless mid-‘60s quartet of Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, and Jimmy Garrison. The effect of Jones’ kaleidoscopic approach to rhythm and drumming is especially felt, brilliantly recast and explored via McLaughlin’s gift for complex metrical structures.

McLaughlin’s restless, enquiring spirit is captured with disarming immediacy on To The One, vividly enhanced by both the skill and soulfulness of the Fourth Dimension. From the surging opener “Discovery” to the gently propulsive title track which closes the compact, forty-minute program, McLaughlin’s own playing is at its very peak: emotional and probing, exploding into flourishes of rapid-fire sixteenth notes one moment, candid and unguardedly vulnerable the next. No slavish imitation or sentimental tribute, To The One is a fiery yet open-hearted work, taking on the artistic and spiritual challenges first offered by Coltrane’s jazz masterpiece while making extensive use of the pioneering musical and technical vocabulary that McLaughlin has honed since the beginning of his storied career.

Mit seinem neuen Album ‘To the One‘ ( Mediastarz/AbstractLogix), wirft der legendäre Gitarrist, Komponist und 2010 Grammy Gewinner sowohl einen Blick in die Vergangenheit als auch in die Zukunft. McLaughlins sechs neue Kompositionen rufen vergessene Erinnerungen hervor. Seine ihm eigenen Rhythmen und Harmonien und der telepathischen Austausch der Band bringen den Einfluss von John Coltane’s spirituellem Meisterstueck A Love Supreme gekonnt zum Vorschein.
Das Studioalbum ‘To the One’ zum grössten Teil im Juli und August 2009 geschrieben, wurde im November/Dezember 2009 mit sehr wenigen ‘Overdubs’ von John McLaughlins derzeitiger Band The 4th Dimension : Gary Husband (Keyboards, Drums), Etienne M’Bappe, (electric Bass) und Mark Mondesir, (Drums) aufgenommen. Die von Coltrane inspirierten Kompositionen verschmelzen mit den facettenreichen Elementen von McLaughlins eigenen Vorstellungen und erinnern an Coltrane, Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner und Jimmy Garrison. Der Effekt von Elvin Jones' kaleidoskopischem Ansatz zu Rhythmus und Drumming ist spürbar, genial gestaltet und ausgeführt von John McLaughlin's beispiellosem Talent for komplexe metrische Strukturen. Die 6 Kompositionen wurden mit einer brillianten Dynamik und ausdruckstarken Vision der Band aufgenommen.

Keine künstliche Imitation, kein sentimentaler Tribut, To the One, ist ein kraftvolles, feuriges und doch offenherziges Werk, das sich der künstlerischen und spirituellen Herausforderung von Coltrane’s Meisterstück stellt und gleichzeitig Gebrauch macht von dem umfangreichen, bahnbrechenden, musikalischen und technischen Vokabular das sich McLaughlin seit Anfang seiner legendären Karriere erarbeitet hat.

Avec son nouvel album "To the One" (Abstract Logix/Mediastarz), le guitariste et compositeur légendaire John McLaughlin (récompensé d'un Grammmy Award en 2010) nous offre un exceptionnel voyage dans le temps. Les six compositions originales de cet album, de par leurs conceptions rythmiques, harmoniques mais également aussi par l'interaction télépathique du groupe s'inscrivent dans la droite lignée de l'influence du chef-d'oeuvre spirituel de John Coltrane en 1965 "A Love Supreme".

La musique du disque fut écrite pendant l'été 2009, puis enregistré en studio en décembre, avec très peu d'overdubs, avec le groupe the 4th Dimension composé Gary Husband (claviers, batterie), Etienne M’Bappe (basse électrique), and Mark Mondesir (batterie). Des éléments évidents inspirés de la musique John Coltrane sont subtilement juxtaposés à l'approche multi-facettes de John McLaughlin, le tout avec une empathie et une vision partagée qui rappelle le quartet décomplexé de John Coltrane au milieu des années 60 avec Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner et Jimmmy Garison. L'effet de kaleidoscope d'Elvin Jones dans l'approche du rythme et le jeu de batterie se ressent particulièrement bien, brillamment retransmis et exploré à travers le don de John McLaughlin pour les structures rythmiques complexes.

Dans "To The One", l'esprit en permanente recherche de John est capturé avec une immédiateté évidente, formidablement servi par l'excellence et la richesse du groupe 4th Dimension.
